When Fletch was two weeks old, he called me.
"We've got this role. Actually, we've got three. And I think you'd be great. Interested?".
Right. Okaaaaaaaay.
"I was desperately searching for a job for 12 bloody months and you decide to dangle one in front of me two weeks, TWO WEEKS after I've had a baby? You've got to be kidding! Could your timing be any worse?!!"
Clearly I didn't say this to him but sweet jesus I was shouting it on the inside. Loudly, I might add. Lo' and behold I thought it might be wise to explore the opportunity further. You know, keep all my options open. And so I did. It couldn't hurt, surely. He emailed me the job spec, we talked some more, emailed some more, and today we met to talk it through.
And this is what I've now got in front of me....
The almost offer of a really good full-time job, with career progression opportunities, in a global company, learning about cutting edge, life changing products. And all with a great manager. Basically everything I wanted out of life, a career, 3 months ago. But now? Now, I've got Fletch. My heart, my soul, my life. All wrapped up in one little baby who I adore spending every single minute of every single day with. He has changed EVERYTHING.
And now I find myself contemplating that old chestnut. You know the one I'm sure all you mums out there have contemplated and agonised over a thousand times before. Do I work, and satisfy my desire for a career, an income, independence? For working towards my own career goals I've had simmering in my slowly deteriorating mind, for years now? Or, do I relish the time I have to stay at home with my first born son? Time I know I'll never have again. Giving him all the love, affection and time he so deserves? Watching him grow, change, learn, smile?
You see, it's one or the other. I just know that I can't do both. I can't work full time, and be with my son in these early days, watching him evolve. And I can't stay at home, and still get the career satisfaction I thought I so desperately wanted.
So.... I have a choice to make.
And although it's bloody hard, it's pretty clear to me which one I'm going to take. But it doesn't make the decision or the sacrifice any easier.
But, it is a choice. And I'm grateful that at least I've got one.
Have you had to decide between working or staying at home to care for your kids?
What did you choose? How did you decide?

Yes, twice I've had someone come out of the woodwork and offer me a GREAT job.
Once I turned it down flat, knowing I had to be with my kids. The next time I accepted and then was unable to get care so had to turn it down. I was disappointed the second time, but now I'm glad as I think it was right for me to stay home a bit longer.
You'll know in your heart what is best for you.
I didn't have a choice, I HAD to go back to work when my son was 6 weeks old. My husband was waiting for his residency and couldn't work and we literally had not a cent. It was horrible. I can honestly say it (and sleep deprivation) was the deciding factor for not having a second child. I just couldn't do fulltime daycare again and to keep our home we both need to work. And now I am too old.
It's a horrible choice. I know it is your choice but I wouldn't batter an eyelid at the job, there will others where that one came from. I'd choose smiles any day.
Everyone's different. For me, I love a bit of a dabble in PT work. It keeps me sane. Day in day out with smalls can be really draining for me. I am nicer when I (luckily) work a 5 day fortnight. I have a brillfab boss, that allows me to do so, I might add...
If it were me, I'd stay at home and enjoy it. He's little. THere'll be boring days, but there'll be so much more than that. But that's only me. Others may beg to differ.
xx My 2 cents.
If he had three jobs to dangle before you Bridget, I'm pretty sure that there'll be work with this company down the track if you want it.
Soak up this time with your glorious boy wholeheartedly, it's a precious moment in your lives that will come but once.
Big hug from afar,
x
It's such a complex decision - but jobs come and go.
Not always absolutely brilliant, life changing ones - but jobs nonetheless.
I work part-time right now and the balance is fantastic (usually!!).
I feel fairly fulfilled on both fronts and cherish the time I get with my Magoo all the more.
You can have both - but it will be a different version of each one.
Ultimately, you do what is right for you and your family - and never feel the need to defend that choice to anyone.
:-) xxx
I certainly don't envy you. What a tough call. It sounds like you know the right answer - I guess once it's made you should try not to dwell on the 'what ifs' and focus on the positives of where you are right now. Good luck x
Imagine in your mind that you are an old old ollllld lady and you are looking back on this moment with clarity, love and acceptance in your heart. You could make either option work but do what's important for you.
After saying that though, i went back to work playing gigs after only a few weeks and regretted the decision. So i stopped! Even here and there, it was too much of a struggle for me personally. For Jude's first year i didn't do much at all except be a Mum, but that's a LOT really isn't it?
:)
B, congratulations to being offered the opportunities! That in itself is worth a pat on the back. I find the whole timing thing so tough, just when women are starting to hit their strides career-wise or have interesting opportunties and responsibilities it coincides with family time. How do you travel to Africa when you're breastfeeding?
As you know, the equal pay issue really presses my buttons: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8ib0thlLtk&feature=youtu.be
I think you should celebrate by watching "I don't know how she does it", and fantasizing over some great SJP corporate outfits and then remembering how uncool it would be to be an investment banker and then give Fletch a hug. One from me too!
Oh sweet lady, my heart ached a little reading this post. It is SO hard for Mama's to be in this position. Just what to do!? I would have struggled to be in the particular one you're in now. Thankfully, I only needed to work part time after my first bubs turned one, then after my second I only worked part time for 4 months, before being made role redundant. Like the universe was kind of pushing me in the direction I needed to go. I couldn't be happier now, but I know if I had to keep working, I would have been happy too. I guess whichever decision we make we have to stand by and give it our all, no point otherwise. Unfortunately no one else can tell you what to do in this situation, only offer support and lend an ear (or a blogosphere) whenever you need to let your feelings run free. Best of luck, you will make the right choice for you hun xoxo
This is a very tough decision to make. I guess its a cliche but its true what they say..listen to your instincts. Then don't look back.
Wishing you good luck as you make a big decision!
Oh, it's Murphy's Law! I had things offered to me when I was pregnant and when I had newborns...not when I was actually wanting the jobs!! But you know I just sent my eldest off to school last month, and that first five years went very quickly. I worked part-time contracting, then less once I had my second child. It's true what they say, you can't get those first years back again once they're at school. I ended up finding my own career path, and wouldn't go back to corporate life despite the great salary. I need to work for my sanity, but part-time was key. Good luck with the juggling! Alison
Tough!
I had no choice, I returned to work when Max was 12 weeks. Every time someone said, 'good morning! How are you?' I had to run to the bathroom & cry.
Don't underestimate the power of the post partum hormone ;)
It was hell Bridget. I freaking hated it.
Follow your heart, but if you don't need to, I say ... soak him up, even just for a few months more. If you're pulling your hair out with boredom, or out of a need for independence, head back! :)
I do both now. I work full-time, from home, 7pm - 3am.
It's hard. The role itself is incredible. But if we won the lottery ... I can tell you now what I wouldn't be doing, & that'd be working! Ha!
Lazy little thing, I am ;
