Bookshelves and books

These boxes are still everywhere. Filled with books. I've filled the bookshelves with things other than books. You know, with my completely useless and illogical but pretty to look at stuff. Is this logical? No. Do I think it looks great? Yes. So bookless the shelves shall stay. Unfortunately this leaves us with loads of books and nowhere logical to put them. Unless, of course, I put them under the bed. Or get rid of them. Both feel slightly sacrilegious. And a little naughty. I'm not sure why, but I feel like books should have themselves a nice little home for all to see. But, as I said, and (Phil) as they shall stay, the bookshelves are otherwise occupied. So...what to do? What to do?

Do your books live on your bookshelves? Are they on show?
Or do you hide your books away somewhere?
What do you do with all your books?

We got rid of all but one bookcase full - it felt AMAZING and cathartic. Especially once you've admitted to how many you honestly aren't going to read again. Now the Oxfam bookshop window in our town is a testament to taste in novels!

I keep my special nice books in the special nice book case where they are interspersed with pretty things. I keep the rest piled and stacked in a cheap Ikea bookshelf in my office.

I now have a Kindle and iPad. It definitely reduces the clutter on my bedside table and I may even donate some books as I can always source them again cheaply on the very off chance I want to read them again. I have way too many books - boxes of them. Need to do something really as they take up lots of space!

Yep, I give them away. To others to read. Apart from children's books (which we got a new bookshelf for) and books that I know I want to keep forever because I'll read and read and read and are for some reason not easily accessible at the library.

When someone mentions they need a book to read, I just give it to them and ask that they pass it on in the same spirit when they've finished...

My bookshelf has lots of vases, photoalbums, a few books, dictionary and atlas and thesaurus and some cooking magazines...

The kitchen has a large # of cookbooks though I recently culled those too.

The bedroom has a small bookshelf near the bed with our we want near us at all times and cannot give away books..

You know this is funny Bridget, because we had the exact same problem when we moved into our terrace. We 'had' a bookshelf, but I didn't like it very much anyway and the look of dusty old books just wasn't too pretty... as much as I do love books. So, the books are STILL in boxes in our shed... after almost 3 years. I know, disgraceful. But sometimes aesthetics and being a bit practical with space win out.
How adorable is your little Fletch looking amongst all that paper, gorgeous! Just don't pack him away ;) xo

Not sure if there's one in HKG, but Sydney has a library for homeless people: http://footpathlibrary.org/

Donate the majority to friends or YWCA (MacDonnell Rd HK). Try to make space for a few of the favourites. Buy a Kindle. You're going to be moving again and I think the movers of the world need to travel light. The rest can afford to stockpile a bit more stuff! Good luck-nothing like getting rid of that last box (even if its shoved in the roof or a garage).
